The Office of Information Technology hires many talented students every semester. Below are the types of positions that may be available and the procedure to follow for obtaining a student employee position with this department.
Unless noted below, applications, with attached class schedule, should be turned in to Delores Minshall at the third floor reception desk of the University Computing Center. If no specific position is requested, applications will be considered for all open positions. Applications are kept for six months.

Positions (all positions require excellent customer service skills)
Classroom Technology Help Desk Attendant: Students in this position monitor the classroom technology command station for problems in the general purpose classrooms. When a help request is received, an intercom channel and remote controls are opened and then troubleshooting skills and published procedures are followed to correct the problem. If the problem is not resolved by this manner, a technologist is dispatched to assist in person. Log sheets and trouble tickets are completed on all requests. Because of the nature of this position, it is imperative that employees be on time and reliable. Good computer and people skills are required and applicants should plan to be a student at WMU for at least two semesters.
Computer Labs: Information technology manages the Bernhard Lab and the University Computing Center Lab. Students seeking employment in one of these labs should have customer service experience and basic computer skills. Student employees are responsible for checking out computers, Monitoring printer and re-filling paper and toner and assist with basic technology needs of Lab Patrons. Work shifts may include evening, weekend and break hours.
Computing Help Desk/Mobile Help Desk: The Help Desk assist students, faculty and staff with technology issue. Applicants must have good customer service skills, which includes being able to communicate technical information effectively to students, faculty and staff. They must also be knowledgeable about computers, both hardware and software, and computer topics, and be willing to follow established procedures. Work shifts may include evening, weekend and break hours.
Faculty Technology Center: This position assists faculty in learning to use technology for teaching their courses. Candidates must have at least an intermediate level of computer skill and be able to explain processes clearly. Graphics and Web experience are a plus. Employees work 10 to 13 hours a week between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and must plan to be a student at Western for at least two semesters. Interested students should turn their applications in at the Faculty Technology Center on the second floor of the University Computing Center.
IT Business Office: Students working in the business office directly assist the budget/accounting/purchasing and contract administration team with a wide range of projects related to expense and revenue report creation and duplication as well as auditing, account reconciliation, revenue processing, etc. Responsibilities also include documentation management, inventory control and maintenance, data entry, audit support, general clerical support, updating and compiling print materials, etc. This position requires a high commitment to confidentiality, accuracy in work product and a mature work ethic. Students seeking this position should have good computer skills and be proficient with spreadsheets and other related office applications. They should also possess solid math/computational skills as well as have the ability to understand complex processes and procedures and follow detailed instructions. Students employed in the business office will gain a better understanding of the role that finance can play in a business and educational non-profit setting and be better prepared to function successfully in the arena of business and/or accounting. Work hours are between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Preference will be given to students who will be enrolled at WMU for at least two semesters, preferably longer. Interested students should turn in completed applications to the business office, located on the third floor of the University Computing Center.
Receptionist Desk/Office: These positions staff the information technology front desk and handle office duties for the business office. General knowledge of computers is required, as is a knowledge of Microsoft Office products. Scheduled hours are between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Specialized Technology Lab: This is a specialized lab, including hardware and software not available in the general computer labs. Staff provide project-driven advice and assistance in the development of academic projects as well as assitiance with screen reading software for blind or low-vision students. Students seeking employment here should have intermediate computer skills and experience with Windows, macOS, Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite. Work shifts may include evening, weekend and break hours.
