Continuing Education Units

Western Michigan University is an approved sponsor of the Continuing Education Unit (CEU), as well as the State Board Continuing Education Unit (SB-CEU). The CEU is a way to measure and record a permanent record of non-credit training and education experiences for an individual.

Western Michigan University defines one CEU as ten contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience. The CEU can be awarded in whole units or fractions of a unit; 5 hours = .5 CEU; 10 hours = 1.0 CEU. At WMU, a contact hour is 60 minutes of instruction. Programs must be at least 3 hours to qualify. Non-instructional portions of a program or experience (i.e., registration, breaks, meals) are not included in the computation of contact hours.

Those who provide workshops or seminars who wish to offer CEUs will need to complete a CEU application form and submit it to WMU. The application will be reviewed and the program administrator will be notified of the CEU award or denial of award. We must have your application a minimum of 30 days prior to the start of the program.

State Board Continuing Education Units (SB-CEU)

State Board Continuing Education Units are an inexpensive way for Michigan teachers, administrators and school psychologists to acquire the credits necessary for recertification. Three SB-CEUs equal one semester hour of college credit. In a five-year period teachers who hold Professional or Occupational certificates, school psychologists and school administrators need to earn:

  • 6 semester hours of college credit
  • 18 SB-CEUs or
  • A combination of both

The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has transitioned to a Secure Central Registry (SCR) which will house all SB-CEUs awarded after January 1, 2010. The SCR will allow educators to view all SB-CEUs awarded after 01/01/2010, regardless of the SB-CEU Sponsor providing the SB-CEUs. The SCR will be available on a 24/7 basis and equipped with a Help Desk to answer questions regarding navigation of the SCR site. The SCR Help Desk will not answer questions regarding awarding of SB-CEUs.  It is strictly for navigation of the SCR only.

With the development and implementation of a SCR, there are changes to the way in which SB-CEUs are awarded:

  • SB-CEU Coordinators will no longer provide participants with SB-CEU certificates of completion.
  • SB-CEU Coordinators will upload to the SCR those attendees eligible to be awarded SB-CEUs.
  • Eligible attendees will be sent an e-mail with instructions on accessing the SCR and completion of a personal profile. After the profile is completed and saved (a valid e-mail address is required and we prefer a school e-mail address), an attendee will be able to select an offering and complete a required common evaluation. The evaluation must be completed within 30 days of notification. At the end of the 30 days, the evaluation is no longer available for completion and SB-CEUs will not be awarded.
  • SB-CEUs are automatically awarded and immediately listed on an Unofficial Transcript. The Unofficial Transcript will contain all the required information needed for certificate renewal: name of the offering and date(s), name of the SB-CEU Sponsor and Coordinator, Program Approval Number, and number of SB-CEUs awarded. An Official Transcript can be purchased for a small charge.

Effective May 1, 2010, the MDE initiated a $25.00 application fee for all new SB-CEU applications. This fee is the responsibility of the program administrator. The WMU SB-CEU Coordinator will contact the program administrator upon receipt of the application.

The above process will be required for all SB-CEUs awarded after 01/01/2010. Many educators have contacted the MDE and their SB-CEU Coordinators regarding a central registry. We are very happy to be able to provide this service to you.
