Current Job Title:

Vice President of Commercial Banking

Current Employer:

Macatawa Bank

Describe your current job:

I meet with potential and existing customers to learn about their business and banking needs; including lending, cash management, and retirement planning.  I engage other bank product and service partners as needed to address these needs and recommend appropriate products/services.      I develop relationships with other business professionals to support my customers and for referral opportunities.     I continually monitor financial and other reports to manage the risk of the loan portfolio.

What is the most rewarding and the most challenging part of your job?

Learning about numerous businesses and industries, and helping business owners and financial executives meet their goals through cost efficient and effective banking services are the most rewarding parts of my job.  The most challenging part of my job is to deliver these services seamlessly while navigating the complex banking regulations.

If you had a campus job or internship, how did they impact your career development?

Prior to obtaining my MBA, I was preparing for a career change, and had made the decision to pursue a career in commercial banking.  Although I had customer contact experience through previous positions, I had no banking experience.     While attending school, I completed an unpaid internship at a local bank.  I received an offer of employment before graduation and have been in banking ever since.

What advice would you offer students to help them decide on a career path?

Talk to the people who know you best.  Ask them what they think your strengths and weaknesses are.  Ask them to help you find your true passion.  Take advantage of internships.  There's no better way to find out if a career will be a good fit for you.
