Steve Moerdyk

Vice President and Controller at US Tarp, Inc.

My current responsibilities include managing the financial and accounting affairs of the company, preparing monthly financials, developing operating metrics to measure performance of the company as well as assist with inventory control and purchasing functions. Additionally, I am leading the company's ERP and systems development implementation efforts.

What is the most rewarding and the most challenging part of your job?

As part of the executive team, I have the privilege of working with multiple departments. This is rewarding in itself because I have the opportunity to encourage and empower people to do their best work with their many talents. With this said, I always have to be fully engaged and ready to solve new problems as they arise, which requires a lot of planning and time management.

Which of your skills had the biggest impact on your success?

One of the best decisions I ever made was to take various positions throughout my undergrad and grad program in various functions. During my undergrad, I worked as a machinist, then I assisted with operation analytics. I then had the opportunity to work in inside sales and customer service. Finally, I had an opportunity to serve as a GL accountant and worked my way up to Senior Accounting / Credit Manager. All of these various areas gave me holistic perspective. I now have a better understanding how various departments should interact to form a complete, unified workplace and culture.

What advice do you have for students looking for their career after college?

Get as much as experience as you can while still in school. Don't be afraid to work in an area you're not entirely familiar with. Learn the processes, apply the knowledge you are learning in the classroom, and you will be setup for success!
