Master of Arts in physical education pedagogy, 2017

K-4 physical education teacher at Bloomfield Hills Schools

I am a K-4 physical education teacher in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. I am also the K-5 Physical Education Content Area Leader for my district. It is my mission to educate minds and develop healthy bodies by empowering each student with the knowledge and skills necessary to make responsible choices that directly impact well-being for a lifetime.

What is the most rewarding and the most challenging part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is seeing my students in their 'AHA' moments. The smiles on their faces when they succeed at something they once thought to be too difficult to obtain is priceless! I love seeing how excited my students are when they walk through the door for physical education class. Their excitement and enthusiasm for exercising and learning is my motivation for providing the best program I can. The most challenging part of being a physical education teacher is the schedule. Every 30 minutes a new class of students is expecting me to give best lesson. Time management, equipment set up and class procedures must be in place for every class, every time. This is a daily challenge, but one that I am up for!

What activities, resources, or people helped you prepare for your career?

The professors in the Human Performance and Health Education department played a huge role in my career preparation. They gave me the skills, knowledge and opportunities to help me succeed as an educator. They are dedicated to their profession and want to see their students succeed. They are always available when you need them and will go the extra mile to make sure their students have what they need to be successful.

What advice do you have for students looking for their career after college?

My advice to students looking for jobs in their career field after college is to stay connected and be confident in themselves. Staying connected to a professional and personal network that supports your ambitions and dreams is a must. Always be on top of the best practices in your field and be willing to learn more as you go. Be confident in your skills but always be looking for ways to grow!
