Engineer I at Consumers Energy

Currently I assist in multiple modes of engineering all associated with the metering and regulation of our natural gas. From analyzing conditions of each of our stations, to retiring assets that have served their time, I play a role in making sure customers have a reliable energy provider.

What is the most rewarding and the most challenging part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is knowing that what I do affects people’s everyday lives. The challenging part is accepting that responsibility, knowing that every move that I make can and will directly affect thousands of people.

Which of your skills had the biggest impact on your success?

The skill that I have that had the biggest impact on my success was my appreciation for quality work. I've learned that my supervisors and team members would rather see an in depth, well-thought through end result that exceeds expectations than to receive a solution quickly that is flawed or mediocre.

What advice do you have for others pursuing a career similar to yours?

Although the path to become an engineer may be considered a difficult one, a short multi-year investment of traditional classroom learning will pay off with many more years of learning and gathering a full understanding about systems and mechanisms needed for production of everyday items.
