Balsac's Odalisque

John Hock

Minneapolis, Minn.

Medium: Fabricated painted steel
Dimensions: 27'4" x 13'8" x 12'6"

As inspiration I have been drawing from architecture in combination with abstract constructions in steel. I use aspects of architecture as elements for sculptures. I am exploring ideas conventional and non-traditional, relating to scale, form and space, surface and method. The architectonic nature of my work is becoming more overt: as elements of visual desire are arranged so that sight and presence, affect the viewer through tensions between crudity and finesse, tumult and serenity. The sculptures draw from abstraction and architecture simultaneously, placing them in a complimentary, reflective relationship.
