As an additional step to harden Western Michigan University's IT infrastructure and computing practices, the Office of Information Technology has partnered with the Office of Legal Affairs, Risk and Compliance to select and adopt the Center for Internet Security (CIS) Controls as WMU's security framework. CIS Controls is a security framework established by a global community of IT experts who collaborate to identify the most common real-world cyber-attacks and develop actions to defend against those attacks. These standards will assist in resourcing and allow WMU to focus on the most important actions to defend against cyber threats.
When are CIS Controls being implemented?
Implementation is already underway. The Office of Information Technology is actively prioritizing cyber security tasks and building a sustainable resourcing plan to ensure WMU maintains a strong computing environment. The controls and actions required will remain a regular point of discussion at IT community meetings, and members of the WMU community will need to be continuously involved to help execute plans.
How does this affect you?
Cyber security is everyone's responsibility. As the cyber security framework is adopted across campus, the Office of Information Technology will be partnering with you. In the meantime, please remain vigilant, safe, and report any concerns to the WMU IT security team at firstname.lastname@example.org
