Symantec Endpoint Protection auto upgrade
Posted by OIT Help Desk on May 10, 2016

Beginning May 12, the Office of Information Technology will be turning
on auto upgrade of the Symantec Endpoint Protection for managed desktop
and laptop computers installed from the GoWMU software downloads. This
will automatically download and install the latest version of the
software (Windows 32Bit and 64Bit machines only) and it will require a
reboot of your system. If you would like to upgrade sooner so you may
manage the system reboot, log in to GoWMU and download Symantec Endpoint
Protection from the Software Downloads area.

Computers with custom install package created by a unit IT support
person, and computers that have already been updated will be excluded.
Questions should be referred to the Help Desk at (269) 387-4357, option 1

SEP emergency upgrade
Posted by OIT Help Desk on July 6, 2016

Please disregard the previous two notices. That is the message that will appear to the user during the updates.

Last week Symantec issued some critical patches. Yesterday, the Department of Homeland Security announced “severity of these vulnerabilities (remote code execution at root or SYSTEM privilege) make this a very serious event”, and US-CERT encourages users and network administrators to patch Symantec or Norton antivirus products immediately.

While there has been no evidence of exploitation, the ease of attack, widespread nature of the products, and severity of the exploit may make this vulnerability a popular target. The download page in GoWMUhas been updated and beginning this morning, all computers running the default WMU-managed client will be upgraded within 24 hours.
