Lee Honors College

AP Math

This full year course allows students to study the main topics of Calculus, including limits, derivatives, integration, sequences and series.  Each of these topics is presented in a manner encouraging the student to understand the theory behind the topic as well as be able to utilize the skill.  The classroom time uses discussion and problem solving so the students can gain an in-depth knowledge of each Calculus topic.  Students are encouraged to develop an analytical mind that can utilize the correct calculus skill for the correct circumstance.  At the end of the course students are prepared to take the Advanced Placement Calculus exam at the higher B/C level.  Upon a satisfactory score on the Advanced Placement BC Calculus exam, most universities will award 2 semesters of Calculus credit.

This class meets two afternoons per week for two hours.  The days of the week varies each year depending on number of students and instructor availability.  A break is held half-way through the class meeting to allow the students to stretch, use the restroom and get a snack from the vending machines (money needed).  The classes meet in a classroom on the Western Michigan University Campus with an instructor that is qualified in mathematics and understands gifted youth.  Each instructor creates their own assessment tools that are used throughout the year.  Grades are given and sent to the student’s school at the semester break and at the end of the year.  Homework is assigned each week and the instructor is available for homework help by email or in class the next week. Graphing calculator is required.
