The Pennsylvania primary and Democratic race for president

April 24, 2008

MP3 audio file

Wrap, suggested lead: Hillary Clinton's victory in the recent Democratic primary in Pennsylvania has done anything but settle who the Democrats will nominate for president. As Mark Schwerin reports, the continuing battle between her and Barack Obama puts the party at a disadvantage.

Clinton won the primary by enough of a margin to continue her bid for the presidency. And that does not bode well for Democratic hopes to take back the White House in November, says Dr. Peter Wielhouwer, a WMU assistant professor of political science.

(:32/Wielhouwer........................White House.)

Wielhouwer says who will be the Democratic nominee may very well end up being decided at the Democratic convention this summer. From Western Michigan University, I'm Mark Schwerin.

Actualities:

CUT ONE: Wielhouwer says the two big primaries remaining, in Indiana and North Carolina, are unlikely to settle things either.

(:24/Wielhouwer......................the summer.)

CUT TWO: Wielhouwer says it's been a long time since the nominees for president are not chosen before party conventions take place.

(:21/Wielhouwer.....................most people.)

CUT THREE: Wielhouwer says many people believe America is ready to elect a black president, but that may not really be the case.

(:38/Wielhouwer.......................counter mobilization.)
