Confucius Institute to host Chinese folk showMarch 16, 2011 KALAMAZOO--Hong Zhang, a nationally renowned mezzo-soprano and senior lecturer of Chinese at Binghamton University, will give a recital and lecture on "China's Ethnic Groups and Their Songs" at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 24, in Kalamazoo College's Dalton Theatre, 1200 Academy St. This educational and entertaining multi-media performance will feature Zhang performing famous folk songs representing a variety of ethnic groups. Chinese folk dancers from the Performing Arts Group of Kalamazoo will entertain between her sets. Zhang, who is the author of the book "Chinese through Song," gives lectures, workshops and concerts nationwide. She is an active soloist who has performed with many groups, including the Shanghai Philharmonic Society and the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus. She earned a bachelor's degree in music from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a master's degree in music from Binghamton University. Tickets are available at the door or in advance through the Confucius Institute at Western Michigan University. General admission tickets cost $5 and tickets for WMU and K-College students with student IDs cost $2.
