KALAMAZOO--College women from across the state will be on the Western Michigan University campus for the 2011 Young Women Strong Leaders Conference taking place from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 25, in the Bernhard Center.

The daylong event helps college women develop effective leadership skills and exposes them to strategies for achieving success in their future endeavors. Registration is continuing through Friday, March 18. The cost to attend is $25, including lunch.

The conference is being held at WMU this month and at Alpena Community College Friday, April 29. WMU's Student Activities and Leadership Programs office is hosting the local conference in conjunction with the Michigan Women's Commission, Michigan Women's ACE Network, Michigan State University Women's Resource Center and Michigan Department of Education.

It will feature informational sessions and workshops presented by community leaders and university professionals and alumni. The keynote speaker will be Jan Barker, who has worked in youth development for nearly 30 years and is CEO of the Girl Scouts-Heart of Michigan Council.

Barker led the Kalamazoo-based Glowing Embers Girl Scout Council for 13 years before it merged with four other councils in 2008. The resulting Heart of Michigan Council serves more than 25,000 girls and 8,000 volunteers in 29 Michigan counties and parts of four others.

"The Young Women Strong Leaders Conference will be a great way for students to network with community members and other students in the region, as well as attend some great sessions on leadership," says Kate Bates, WMU conference co-coordinator. "We're excited to offer this opportunity to impact the women at WMU and other institutions in Michigan."
