Trustees approve 45 retirements

KALAMAZOO--The retirements of four faculty members and 41 staff members were approved by the Western Michigan University Board of Trustees at its Dec. 17 meeting.
Trustees also accepted the resignation of one faculty member and signed off on a promotion for one faculty member as well as changes in the department affiliation for two others.

Faculty retirements

All of the faculty members who are retiring are doing so with emeritus status. Their names, positions, years of continuous service and effective dates of retirement are:

  • Bruce Naftel, associate professor of art, 38-1/2 years, effective April 26, 2013
  • Dr. Peter G. Northouse, professor of communication, 36-1/2 years, effective April 30, 2011
  • Iskender Sahin, professor of mechanical and aeronautical engineering, 26-1/2 years, effective Dec. 21, 2010
  • Robert Waite, associate professor of sociology, 38-1/2 years, effective June 13, 2010

The faculty member resigning is Dr. Edward Van Wesep, faculty specialist II-lecturer, Department of Economics, effective May 1, 2011

The faculty member receiving a promotion is Sharon Peterson, who was raised in rank from instructor to assistant professor of educational leadership, research and technology, effective Aug. 20, 2010.

The faculty members granted new departmental affiliations are Dr. Paula Andrasi, associate professor, and Dr. Richard M. Oxhandler, professor. The two were affiliated with the University Counseling and Testing Center and moved to the Department of Physician Assistant and the Holistic Health Program, effective Dec. 13, 2010.
