Friday's game ball hand delivered in 'Rivalry Run'

Nov. 4, 2010

KALAMAZOO--The 140 miles between Western Michigan University and Central Michigan University will be covered on foot beginning Thursday, Nov. 4, as members of both schools' Army ROTC units stage a Rivalry Run to transfer the game ball for the Nov. 5 showdown between the Bronco and Chippewa football teams.

The ball will leave WMU's Activity Therapy Building on the Oakland Drive campus in Kalamazoo at 2 p.m. with up to 30 members of the WMU Army ROTC unit taking turns in pairs running the ball 64 miles to the Ionia State Park for a midnight handoff to their CMU counterparts. The CMU group will complete the second half of the run delivering the ball to CMU's Kelly/Shorts Stadium in Mt. Pleasant just prior to the 6 p.m. kickoff Friday.

The annual run is part of an effort to reprise a WMU/CMU game week tradition popular in earlier times.
