Faculty scholarship focus of open house

Oct. 12, 2010

KALAMAZOO--Discussion and networking regarding research and resources at Western Michigan University will be among highlights of a Research and Dessert Open House from 1 to 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22, at the Fetzer Center.

Sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research, the event is an opportunity for faculty to learn about funding opportunities and strategies, connect with WMU colleagues and share ideas. Resource stations and roundtable discussions on a variety of topics will offer opportunities to network, learn about others' scholarship and explore potential collaborations.

Resource information topics include search tools and strategies for foundation funding, research in international settings, library resources for scholarship development and dissemination, internal funding opportunities, technology transfer and commercialization resources, support from the grants and contracts office, and compliance tools and proposal development strategies. Also included will be information on engaging graduate students, connecting with governmental agencies and policymakers, and searching for funding opportunities.

Interdisciplinary roundtable discussions will focus on faculty collaborations in such areas as sustainable energy, health-related research, early childhood development and education, environmental issues, higher education teaching and learning, ethical conduct of research and other ad-hoc topics of faculty interest.

"When we hosted the Research and Dessert networking event in January, the response from faculty was overwhelmingly positive," says Dr. Paula Kohler, associate vice president for research. "Individual faculty members learned about resources they did not know existed and made connections with other faculty from other disciplines with whom they typically do not interact."

"The research office organized this event for fall semester to offer faculty another opportunity to explore the resources and support available at WMU for research and collaboration," says Dr. Daniel Litynski, vice president for research. "We are here to foster those connections that are so important in collaborative research."

Registration is encouraged to plan for seating and order desserts for the event. For more information or to register, visit wmich.edu/research or call (269) 387-8205.
