WMUK sets member goal in fall campaignOct. 8, 2010 KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University's public radio station, WMUK, will try something new in its annual fall campaign, setting a goal for the number of new and renewing members rather than a dollar amount.
The station, located at 102.1-FM on the radio dial, will strive for 2,000 members, either those donating or pledging support for the first time or renewing their support. With the theme "Members Make the Difference," the fall campaign begins the on-air portion of the drive on Saturday, Oct. 16. On air pledging continues through Friday, Oct. 22. "We had wanted to move toward this model for a while," says Gordon Bolar, station development director. "This is the first time doing it this way. We'll see how listeners respond." During the on-air part of the campaign, station hosts will give updates on the number of members who have called in instead of reporting the amount of money raised, Bolar says. "If we can reach our goal of 2,000 members, the strength of our average contribution will get us where we need to be from a dollar standpoint," Bolar says. The station uses membership contributions to purchase programs such as Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and A Prairie Home Companion. Pre-drive mail-in contributions and on-line gifts will be significant factors in helping WMUK continue to reduce pledge hours. Listeners can become members online at wmuk.org.
