WMU holds state legislative candidate forum

Oct. 4, 2010

KALAMAZOO--Democratic and Republican party candidates for state Senate and two state House seats representing Kalamazoo County will answer questions at a public forum Tuesday, Oct. 5, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Fetzer Center at Western Michigan University.

Gordon Evans, Morning Edition anchor for public radio WMUK will moderate the forum. Participating are candidates for the 20th Senate district, which includes all of Kalamazoo County and Antwerp and Paw Paw townships in Van Buren County; and for the 60th and 61st House districts, which constitute the western three-fourths of Kalamazoo County, including the cities of Kalamazoo and Portage.

20th Senate candidates
Republican Tonya Schuitmaker
Democrat Robert B. Jones

60th House candidates
Republican Jeff Fernandez
Democrat Sean McCann

61st House candidates
Republican Margaret O'Brien
Democrat Thomas Batten

Candidates are listed above in the order they appear on the November ballot.

Each candidate will make brief opening remarks. Candidates will then respond to questions submitted by the audience as selected and read by the moderator.

The outcome of the November general election will shape the direction of Michigan for the next decade and beyond. All statewide offices are up for election, none with an incumbent, and term limits will force a large turnover in the Legislature.

WMU's Office of Legislative Affairs is sponsoring the forum.
