Cost of West Hills benefit increases slightly

Sept. 1, 2010

KALAMAZOO--Membership at the West Hills Athletic Club will change slightly this fall for benefits-eligible employees at Western Michigan University.

Benefits-eligible employees may still activate their yearly membership and pay nothing more than the taxes on the value of that membership. However, as was recently announced for WMU's Student Recreation Center, the WMU Board of Trustees during its July 23 meeting increased the $225 value of a yearly membership by $45 to $270.

The change, effective starting with the fall semester, means that employees who renew or start memberships at West Hills will see a modest increase in the taxes they pay for this wellness benefit.

WMU emeriti and retirees as well as their spouses may continue to join West Hills for free, but they must sign up in person. Non-benefits-eligible employees and others affiliated with the University become members of the club by paying monthly membership fees.

A public facility, West Hills is owned by WMU and located at 2001 S. 11th St. in Kalamazoo. It operates year round and offers a wide range of tennis and fitness programs; exercise classes, including pilates reformer classes; fitness equipment; and personal training options.

"West Hills has a comfortable, non-intimidating atmosphere. You'll find we have friendly and knowledgeable staff to help you meet your health and fitness goals," says Amy Boven, the club's membership and marketing director. "The increase in the taxable portion of your membership this fall will be very minimal, and will only be a slight difference in what you paid in the past for limited-access membership."

Individuals may join West Hills at any time, and memberships are processed immediately. The membership year starts the day individuals join and ends one year from that date.

For West Hills membership information, visit westhillsathletic.com or contact Amy Boven at amy.boven@wmich.edu or (269) 387-0434.

Membership forms are available online, and may be faxed to the office. Those wishing to join also may do so in person from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. Membership staff is available on the weekends, as well.
