New Play Project showcases student talent

June 11, 2010

KALAMAZOO--Staged readings of new plays by Western Michigan University students will be performed this month in York Arena Theatre at the Gilmore Theatre Complex.

New Play Project productions will be held at 7 p.m. June 11-12, 17, 25-26 and 28. All performances are free and open to the public.

Now in its seventh season, New Play is a collaborative project of WMU's theatre and English departments. The performances are the culmination of a summer course in the rehearsal and development of new plays. Each piece receives two weeks of rehearsal with the cast and crew before being presented as script-in-hand staged-readings with minimal production elements.

This year's schedule also includes a student production of "The Butcher of Baraboo," by emerging national playwright Marisa Wegrzyn.
