Early music ensemble presents free concertMarch 16, 2010 KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University's early music ensemble, Collegium Musicum, will present a free, public concert at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, at the Dalton Center Recital Hall. The 19 singers and 16 instrumentalists of Collegium Musicum are led by Matthew Steel, associate professor of music at WMU. The group is devoted to the repertory of pre-Classical music--generally anything before the career of W.A. Mozart. The ensemble performs music from the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque eras. The March 30 concert will include sonatas, motets, villancicos, 13th century cantigas and other music from the Iberian Peninsula as well as Spanish and Portuguese colonies in the New World. Featured instruments include harpsichord, harps, psaltery, vielle, rebec, viola da gamba, shawm, crumhorns, cornetto, recorder, flute and percussion.
