Non-conference football schedule finalized

Dec. 18, 2009

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University has finalized its non-conference schedule for the 2010 season with four opponents, including Michigan State and Notre Dame.

The Broncos will open the 2010 campaign against Michigan State Sept. 4 in East Lansing. It will mark only the eighth time in program history WMU has opened a season against a Big Ten opponent. Two of the previous seven times have been during the Bill Cubit era--at Indiana in 2007 and at Michigan in 2009.

WMU holds its annual CommUniverCity Night Sept. 11, when Nicholls State comes to Waldo Stadium. It will be the first meeting between the two schools.

The Broncos follow up the home season opener with a pair of Mid-American Conference dates before returning home for a showdown with the Vandals of Idaho on Oct. 2. WMU leads the all-time series 2-0 against Idaho, including a 51-28 win in 2008.

WMU closes out its non-conference slate Oct. 16 with a trip to South Bend, Ind., for a meeting with Notre Dame. The Broncos will be the first MAC team during the conference's existence to play the Fighting Irish.

Western Michigan's conference schedule will be announced this spring along with television dates for the Broncos.
