Open enrollment is under way

Oct. 26, 2009

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University's open-enrollment period for health insurance and flexible spending accounts began today and will continue through 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6.

Open enrollment for health insurance is available for WMU's AAUP faculty; MSEA, POA and benefits-eligible non-bargaining employees; and retirees from those groups.

During open enrollment, employees and retirees have the option of adding eligible dependents to their health insurance. Elections made during the period are effective Jan. 1. Detailed information was mailed to home addresses of employees and retirees the week of Oct. 12. Visit wmich.edu/hr to review that information.

Employees who wish to participate in a flexible spending account in 2010 must enroll or re-enroll during the open-enrollment period. Flex accounts offer an opportunity to use tax-free dollars to pay for dependent care expenses or qualified medical expenses not covered by insurance.

Current and new participants must submit an enrollment form to Human Resources by the deadline. The form is part of the BASIC Flex enrollment booklet and available at wmich.edu/hr or in Human Resources, 1300 Seibert Administration Building.
