Free University Symphony Orchestra concertSept. 20, 2009 KALAMAZOO--The Western Michigan University Symphony Orchestra will kick off its concert season with a free, public performance at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, in Miller Auditorium. The Orchestra will open with two short musical rides: "The Ride of the Valkyries," by Richard Wagner, and "Short Ride on a Fast Machine," by American composer John Adams. The show will continue with French master composer Jacques Ibert's "Escales: Ports of Call," which recalls scenes from Rome, Tunis and Valencia. The evening will conclude on a sultry note, with Maurice Ravel's "Bolero." The concert also will feature a solo by Stulberg International String Competition finalist Keir GoGwilt. GoGwilt, who is currently a violin student at the Juilliard School of Music, will perform the poignant "Violin Concerto," by 20th-century German master Alban Berg.
