'No smoking' signs installed campuswide

Jan. 26, 2009

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University personnel recently finished installing signs campuswide alerting smokers to University regulations that prohibit smoking within 25 feet of all campus buildings.

According to Peter Strazdas, director of maintenance services, some 500 signs were placed on building entrances in an effort that began last summer and was completed in December. Each sign includes a graphic and text that says, "Welcome to our smoke-free environment. Smoking is not allowed within 25 feet of buildings."

The project was triggered by change in University policy implemented early in 2008 that increased the no-smoking perimeter around all campus buildings. All members of the University community are urged to review the complete policy, which can be found at wmich.edu/policies.

To report any exterior doors that still might need signage, call the WMU Sign Shop at (269) 387-8597 and employees from that shop will install the sign at no cost to departments.
