New policy protects employees who report threats

Nov. 21, 2008

DETROIT--A new presidential policy outlining protections for employees who report threats or threatening behavior was shared with members of the Western Michigan University Board of Trustees at the board's Nov. 7 meeting.

The Faculty-Staff Indemnification Policy, which was effective Nov. 7, reaffirms the faculty and staff's role in securing campus safety and security, outlines employee responsibilities in such situations and pledges the backing of the University for employees fearful of being vulnerable to civil suits as a result of reporting such information.

According to the policy, "the University will defend, hold harmless and indemnify faculty and staff from civil liability who make a report in good faith to the appropriate University office that an individual made or poses an imminent threat."
