Western Winds in free Messiaen tribute concert

Oct. 30, 2008

KALAMAZOO--Dr. Robert Spradling directs the Western Winds, an ensemble composed of Western Michigan University School of Music faculty and graduate students, in its first concert of the season at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, in the Dalton Center Recital Hall.

The performance, which is open to the public free of charge, celebrates the centennial anniversary of composer Olivier Messiaen's birth.

Guest conductor Dr. David Colson, director of WMU's School of Music, and guest piano soloist Lori Sims, professor of music, will join the ensemble to present Messiaen's "Exotic Birds." The concert will also include Igor Stravinsky's "Sinfonies of Wind Instruments" and a fanfare for solo horn featuring Lin Foulk, assistant professor of music, as well as performances by the graduate wind and brass quintets.
