Professional groups announce award, scholarship winners

KALAMAZOO--Eleven Western Michigan University staff members have received 2008 awards and scholarships from the Administrative Professional Association and Professional Support Staff Organization, WMU's two non-bargaining employee groups.

The awards were presented during the annual APA/PSSO Awards and Spring Luncheon held May 16. The scholarships were announced independently by the two groups the following week.

Receiving this year's APA awards were Thom Myers, director of electronic communication in the Office of University Relations, Outstanding Professional award; Michael Vlassis, ticket office manager for Miller Auditorium, Outstanding New Professional award; and Faith Wicklund, business manager for Miller Auditorium, Tony Griffin Service Award.

Receiving this year's PSSO Service Award were Mary Escobedo, office assistant in University Counseling and Testing Services, and Carol Morris-Mier, office associate in the College of Education's admissions and advising office.

The final honor presented at the annual luncheon, the WMU Spirit Award created by the event's organizing committee, went to Vicky Meinema, office associate in accounting services.

The APA's two annual $500 scholarships, which support APA members' children who attend WMU, went to Chelsea Keck, the daughter of Patricia Keck, budget officer in the Office of University Budgets, and Ryan Crawley, the son of Rosanna Metoyer, coordinator of business operations in Auxiliary Enterprises.

The spring scholarships sponsored by the PSSO, which go to PSSO members or their dependents who attend WMU, totaled $170 and was divided among Tracie Sherburn, finance specialist in accounting; Steven Siwik, son of Cheryl Siwik, payroll clerk in the payroll office; and Gregory Flynn, son of Joyce Flynn, office associate in the College of Education.

Also recognized during the Awards and Spring Luncheon were the members of the event's organizing committee. In addition to Escobedo, Morris-Mier and Sherburn, they were committee lead and Co-chair Terri Culver, finance specialist in accounting services; Co-chair Mary Ramlow, office coordinator in the Evaluation Center; Jackie Angel, business office supervisor in the Sindecuse Health Center; Peggy Miller, Human Resources representative; Connie Peruchietti, account executive in the Fetzer Center; Kandeiss-Toi Ross, Human Resources assistant; Wendy Schutz, office assistant in purchasing; and Cindy Zimmerman, finance specialist in accounting services.
