Career Fair expected to draw 2,000 attendees

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University's 30th annual Career Fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 7, on the second-floor of the Bernhard Center on the main campus in Kalamazoo.

The event is free for job seekers and open to the public but tailored for WMU students and alumni.

The 2008 Career Fair is expected to attract more than 2,000 job candidates. Advance registration is not required. Job seekers planning to attend should dress professionally and bring several copies of a current resume.

Some 160 organizations representing the life sciences, business, aviation, health care, government and manufacturing sectors have registered to participate. Many employers will return Friday, Feb. 8, to conduct first-round interviews with select job candidates.

The event is being organized by Career and Student Employment Services at WMU. Welcoming and assisting the participating employers will be University volunteers from Drive Safe Kalamazoo as well as the Communication Student Organization, Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity, football team, Honors Student Association and Public Relations Organization.

Enterprise Rent-a-Car will provide transportation for employers from lot 10 on East Campus to the Bernhard Center. Student and metered parking is available in Parking Structure 1 next to Ellsworth Hall.

A series of preparation events for the fair will be held on campus. They include:

Jan. 28--A presentation by Quicken Loans recruiters on networking tips, in collaboration with Delta Sigma Pi.

Jan. 29-- A discussion by Eli Lilly representatives on how students can effectively market their majors to employers while focusing on their skills.

Feb. 4--"Five-minute feedback" sessions presented by Target Corp. executive team leaders on the impressions students' resumes project.

Feb. 7--Panel discussions by members of local life sciences companies that focus on careers in research and science.
