Few campus services open during holiday recess

KALAMAZOO--Except for essential and emergency services, Western Michigan University will be closed beginning Saturday, Dec. 22, and will reopen Thursday, Jan. 3. With the end of fall semester Dec. 15, many campus services are already closed or have reduced hours through the start of spring semester Monday, Jan. 7.

The only public events on campus through the start of spring semester are Bronco men's basketball games Dec. 18, Jan. 2 and 5; and Bronco hockey matches Dec. 18 and Jan. 4. There is also a public art exhibit, "Keeping it Real," in the Richmond Center through Dec. 21.

Residence halls open for spring semester at 9 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 6.

Spring semester classes begin at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7.

Listed below are hours for selected University offices and services. Faculty, students and the public are encouraged to call ahead to make sure that a particular office on campus is open. For emergencies only, contact WMU Public Safety at (269) 387-5555.

Bernhard Center and Bronco Mall hours are available on the Bernhard Center Web site. All facilities and mall stores are on reduced hours through Monday, Jan. 7, and the entire building is closed beginning Saturday, Dec. 22, and reopens Thursday, Jan. 3.

BCC lab (Bernhard Center computer lab) is closed through Jan. 2; is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 3-4; is closed Jan. 5-6; and opens at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, and resumes 24-hour operation.

UCC lab (University Computer Center lab) is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 17-21; open noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 22-23; closed Dec. 24-25; open noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 26-30; closed Dec. 31 and Jan. 1; open noon to 5 p.m. Jan. 2; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 3-4; open noon to 5 p.m. Jan. 5-6; and resumes normal hours, Monday, Jan. 7.

Sindecuse Health Center and its pharmacy are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 17-20; open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 21; open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 27-28 and Jan. 2; and resumes normal hours Jan. 3. The health center is closed Dec. 22-26 and Dec. 29 through Jan. 1. Medical emergencies should be referred to local hospitals or other health care providers.

Student Recreation Center hours are available on the center's Web site. The center is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 17-21; closed Dec. 22 through Jan. 1; open noon to 7 p.m. Jan. 2-6; and resumes normal hours Monday, Jan. 7.

Unified Clinics closes Dec. 22 and reopens Jan. 2, one day earlier than most other University offices. The University Substance Abuse Clinic will remain open on reduced hours throughout the closure. For hours and more information, call (269) 387-8230.

Waldo Library is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 17-21; closed Dec. 22 through Jan. 2; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 3-4; closed Jan. 5-6; and resumes normal hours, Monday, Jan. 7.

To reduce energy costs while the University is closed, heating and cooling systems in all office and classroom buildings controlled by the WMU Building Energy Management System will be in "holiday mode." Air handlers will not run during this time, unless a space is exempt from the program or the temperature in a particular space goes outside of the range of 60 to 85 degrees. Portions of a particular building that do not normally go into "night setback mode," will not go into "holiday mode."
