Annual Family Weekend rescheduled for October

July 25, 2007

KALAMAZOO--Parents and families of all new and returning Western Michigan University students are invited to celebrate their campus involvement and share in the Bronco spirit by coming to town for Family Weekend 2007. The festivities, originally planned for September, have been rescheduled to take place Friday through Sunday, Oct. 5-7.

WMU's 40th annual Family Weekend honors the year-round commitment parents and family members show to the University. It involves friends and families in college life and gives everyone a chance to experience all that is fun and festive about Kalamazoo in the fall.

"The weekend is a great opportunity for parents and families to connect with the campus and surrounding community," says Shari Glaser, director of parent and family programs at WMU, "and it allows them to spend time with their students."

There will be a variety of activities for students and families to participate in this year, beginning Friday afternoon and concluding Sunday morning. Participants are invited to take tours and attend entertainment and athletic events around campus, and much will be happening in Kalamazoo, including the Art Hop Friday evening and Farmer's Market Saturday morning.

The highlight of Family Weekend will be Saturday, when family and friends gather to attend a special tailgate before heading to Waldo Stadium to cheer on their WMU Broncos at the 7 p.m. football game against Akron. As a way of welcoming new families to campus, the University is offering discounted tickets to the game. Local hotels are also offering special rates for the weekend.

Family Weekend is a program of WMU's Office of Parent and Family Programs, which engages families and assists them in proactively supporting their students' growth, personal development and educational success. The office serves as a contact point, liaison and information gateway for the parents and family members of all WMU students.
