2007 Air Race Classic 'flight log'

June 20, 2007

by Jennifer Jakubiec and Alison Pierce

LEWISBURG, W.Va.--We departed Jefferson City, Mo., at 7 a.m. today (June 20). We waved bye to the capital building and proceeded to capture our best tailwinds of the day down to Bowling Green, Ky.

At Bowling Green Airport, the volunteers served us lunch. We hung out in Kentucky for most of the day waiting for the winds to die down. We fired up the engine when we were ready to press on and to our surprise the oil pressure sensor was giving faulty indications. With the help of a local mechanic and WMU maintenance we were soon back in the air.

The trip to Lewisburg was a new experience for the both of us. The rolling hills of eastern Kentucky and West Virginia provided a scenic flight. The airport in Lewisburg sits in the foothills and was slightly hidden from our direction of flight.

We traveled a total distance of 580 nautical miles and took many pictures along the way. Tomorrow we head out for New York and are looking forward to a safe flight through the Appalachian Mountains.
