University Theatre presents "Once on this Island"

KALAMAZOO--Showcasing the final musical of its 100th anniversary season, University Theatre at Western Michigan University presents seven performances of "Once on this Island" March 22 through April 1, in the Multiform Theatre.

Set in the Caribbean Antilles islands and based on the story of "The Little Mermaid," the musical tells the heartwarming tale of Ti Moune, a poor peasant girl who falls in love with Daniel, an upper class boy whose life she saves after a car crash. As their two worlds collide, the forces of the gods and fates, custom and tradition swirl around the young lovers and guide their destinies.

"Once on this Island" was nominated for eight Tony awards including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. It was the first breakout hit for the composing team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, who went on to create Broadway gold with "Ragtime," "Seussical" and "My Favorite Year."

Starring students from WMU's music theatre performance program, "Once on this Island" features guest artist and music director Jamie Reed.

Tickets for University Theatre productions can be purchased by calling (269) 387-6222 or by visiting the Gilmore Theatre Complex Ticket Office weekdays between noon and 5 p.m. Senior citizens and WMU students, faculty and staff receive discounts on the regular ticket price of $17 each.
