Elaine M. Hurst

Oct. 19, 2006

Elaine M. Hurst, who taught biology at Western Michigan University from 1954 to 1966, died Sept. 1 in Kalamazoo. She was 86.

Despite a heavy teaching schedule, Hurst found time to be a sorority advisor, sing in a choral group, raise a family and be active in scouting. She earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics from WMU in 1942 and taught in Milford, Mich., and Richland, Mich., before returning to the University and completing a master's degree in chemistry.

A St. Joseph, Mich. native, Hurst earned a doctoral degree in botany from Michigan State University in 1965, and moved to Nazareth College in Kalamazoo in 1966 for the final 19 years of her career.
