Aug. 1, 2006

KALAMAZOO--Kalamazoo Film Society presents "Water," a 2005 film set in 1938 India and starring Lisa Ray and John Abraham, Friday through Sunday, Aug. 11-13, in the Little Theatre at Western Michigan University.

Little Theatre show times for "Water" are 7 and 9:30 p.m. Friday; 4:30, 7 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday; and 2:30 and 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5 and $3 for students. The film is rated PG-13 for adult themes and is presented in Hindi with English subtitles.

"Water" tells a powerful story of humanity and spirituality during a time of political and social change. Following the Hindu law that forces widows to spend the rest of their lives as outcasts, Chuyia, an 8-year-old child, is sent to an ashram to spend the rest of her life with other widows when her husband dies. Chuyia's spirit and energy soon challenge the convent-like atmosphere of the ashram, and her presence enables other women to challenge their destinies as well.

The Little Theatre is located at the corner of Oakland Drive and Oliver Street on WMU's historic East Campus. There is free off-street parking behind the theatre. For more information, call the movie line at (269) 387-8221, or visit KFS at www.kalfilmsociety.net,
