Russell named director for two WMU campuses

July 2, 2006

KALAMAZOO--A veteran higher education administrator has been named director of Western Michigan University's Extended University Programs campuses in Battle Creek and Lansing.

Sharon Russell is a business professional with an extensive background in finance and marketing and 16 years of experience at WMU. She replaces Dr. Darrell Johnson, who is now the University's dean of EUP.

Russell has made a positive impact on the University, where she has held numerous leadership roles. Her campus experience includes positions with the Department of Theatre and the WMU Alumni Association, as well as the Division of Student Affairs, where she was director of development and marketing. Most recently, she served as the business manager for the division's University Recreation unit. Russell is also a part-time faculty member who teaches interpersonal communication and public speaking.

"I am absolutely pleased to welcome Sharon aboard the EUP team," says Johnson. "Her breadth of experience in business, finance, management and communication made her an ideal choice for the position. We are excited about the contributions and anticipated leadership Sharon will bring to EUP."

Russell assumed her role with EUP June 19. She will oversee both the Battle Creek and Lansing campus locations, where she will lead strategic business development, community relations and marketing efforts.

Russell earned a bachelor's degree in theatre arts from Loyola University and a master's degree in communication from the University of Illinois.
