WMU Home > About WMU > WMU News Softball Broncos are top seed in MAC TourneyMay 8, 2006 KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University's softball team won the Mid-American Conference regular season championship, the MAC West Division title and capped one of its best regular seasons ever with an 8-2 victory over the University of Toledo at WMU's Ebert Field this past weekend. "We played all 22 players on our roster, which will be a huge plus for us going into the MAC Tournament," said coach Kathy Leitke, whose team took three of four games during the weekend. WMU finished the regular season with a 31-13 overall mark and, by virtue of its 18-4 league record, is the top seed in the MAC Tournament, which will be played at Currie Stadium in Midland, Mich., Thursday through Saturday, May 10-13. This is the second year of an expanded eight-team field in the MAC Tournament, which will be played in Midland for the first time. The eight tournament teams are: WMU (MAC 18-4); Kent State (16-5); Bowling Green (16-6); Central Michigan (13-7); Eastern Michigan (14-8); Akron (13-9); Northern Illinois (10-12); and Ohio (7-15), which edged out Miami University on tiebreakers for the eighth seed. First round pairings, Thursday, May 10 The championship game is slated for Saturday, May 13, at 3 p.m. The tournament champion receives the league's automatic berth in the 2006 NCAA Tournament. UPDATE (May 15, 2006)--Following victories in the first two rounds of the MAC Tournament, the Broncos lost, 2-1, to Kent State University in the championship game. Despite a 34-win season, including a victory over defending national champion University of Michigan, WMU was not awarded an at-large berth in the 2006 NCAA Tournament.
