Faculty members are invited to join the FYE team by teaching one of 50 seminar sections of about 25 students each and mentoring the students in their sections. Those who agree to serve as facilitators are compensated for teaching the First-Year Seminar and for full participation in the FYE faculty orientation and faculty development sessions. In addition, they are assigned a seminar student leader to assist them. The seminars are part of the FYE initiative inaugurated last year to start out incoming students right and help them persist in their studies through graduation. "The First-Year Seminar is designed to be a true collaborative effort across WMU's colleges, departments, programs and academic disciplines," says Toni Woolfork-Barnes, FYE programs director.
