Marier and Sturgis earn MAC academic honors

KALAMAZOO--Senior Cherisse Marier and junior Jennifer Sturgis of the Western Michigan University gymnastics team have been named to the Mid-American Conference All-Academic Team. This is the second time in Marier's career that she has received the recognition.

Marier, from Windsor, Ontario, holds a grade-point average of 3.86 with a major in biomedical science. Sturgis, a nursing major from Novi, Mich., has a 3.63 GPA.

Marier and Sturgis will compete at the NCAA Regionals in the all-around competition Saturday, April 7, at Louisiana State University.

At the March 25 MAC Championships held in WMU's University Arena, WMU won the league title for the first time since 1987 and had the top two individual totals. Sturgis finished first with a score of 39.100, and Marier took second overall with 39.050. Both were named to the All-MAC First Team. Marier was named MAC Gymnast of the Year and Senior of the Year.
