Mustangs win second straight CCWHA title

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University's women's club hockey team, the Mustangs, completed the 2005-06 season ranked seventh in the nation and earned a second consecutive championship in the Central Collegiate Women's Hockey Association.

The Mustangs were 19-10-3 overall and 18-1-2 in the CCWHA. They won the league tournament, 3-2, in overtime versus the University of Michigan. WMU sophomore Beth Cannon scored the game winning goal. Juniors Kelly Gittelman and Katy Washburn and sophomores Nikki Tsouris and Heather Mannix were named to the all-conference team. Gittelman also was named tournament MVP. The tournament was played the final weekend in February in Kalkaska, Mich.

WMU was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the American Collegiate Hockey Association national championships March 9-12 in St. Louis.

In addition to Michigan and WMU, other members of the CCWHA are Michigan State University, Northern Michigan University and Ohio State University. The Mustangs play their home matches at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo.
