WMU HOME > ABOUT WMU > WMU NEWS Road closings announced for Campus ClassicOct. 6, 2005 KALAMAZOO--Construction of two new buildings in the heart of Western Michigan University's main campus has prompted major changes in the courses for the annual Homecoming Campus Classic 1K and 5K races. As a result of the course changes some additional roads and parking lots will be closed to traffic compared to past races. New closings, from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, include the roads and lots around Friedmann Hall, Gilmore Theatre Complex and Miller Auditorium. Parking Structure 2, also known as the "Miller Parking Ramp," will be closed, and no vehicles will be allowed in or out between 9 and 10 a.m. Both races begin and end in front of the Bernhard Center, which is unchanged. Also unchanged is the closing from 6 to 11 a.m. of West Michigan Avenue in front of the Bernhard Center and all of the parking lots along that section of West Michigan as well as the closing from 9 to 10 a.m. of Business Court and all parking lots in the area of the Haworth College of Business and Fetzer Center. The new 1K course takes participants around the Trustee Fountain at Waldo Library, down South Hays Road, in front of the Student Recreation Center and up West Michigan to the finish line in front of the Bernhard Center. The new 5K course takes runners and walkers past or near several campus landmarks, including Waldo Library, Gilmore Theatre Complex, Miller Auditorium, Faunce Student Services Building, Haenicke Hall, Lee Honors College, Everett Tower, Fetzer Center and Schneider Hall, home of the Haworth College of Business. The final mile of the course takes runners into Goldsworth Valley and past Goldsworth Pond, using walkways along Rankin Avenue, Goldsworth Drive and Gilkison Avenue. According to race officials, the new 5K race route is faster and better than previous courses, because it eliminates several tight turns and narrow passages of the previous courses. The 1K Fun Run and Walk starts at 8:15 a.m. The 5K Run and Walk starts at 9 a.m. For more information, to register for either race or to download maps of the new courses as PDF files, visit the Campus Classic on the Web at www.wmich.edu/race.
