Several campus roads closed for Homecoming events

KALAMAZOO--Several roads and parking lots on the campus of Western Michigan University will be closed for brief periods Friday and Saturday, Oct. 15-16, to accommodate two of the more popular annual events of WMU Homecoming--Friday's Soap Box Derby and Saturday's Campus Classic 5K run and 1K walk and kid's fun run.

Soap Box Derby, Friday, Oct. 15

Gilkison Avenue, next to Sindecuse Health Center, will be closed Friday, Oct. 15, from noon to 2:30 p.m. for the 34th running of the Soap Box Derby.

Campus Classic, Saturday, Oct. 16

Multiple roads and parking lots will be closed--most for relatively short periods--Saturday morning, Oct. 16, to permit the sixth annual running of the Homecoming Campus Classic 5K run and 1K walk and kid's fun run. Road and lot closings for the Campus Classic are listed below.

Closed 5 a.m. to noon

  • Lot 49 (between Sangren Hall and Kanley Chapel).

Closed 5 to 11 a.m.

  • West Michigan Avenue (in front of the Bernhard Center) from North Dormitory Road to South Hayes Road
  • Archer Drive in front of the Bernhard Center
  • Circle drive in front of the Oaklands
  • Lot 50 (in front of Seibert)
  • Lots 68 and 69 (in front of Henry Hall)

Closed 8:45 to 9:30 a.m.

  • S. Hayes from W. Michigan to S. Dormitory
  • S. Dormitory from S. Hayes to Arcadia Road
  • Arcadia from S. Dormitory to North Vande Giessen
  • All parking lots along the affected portions of S. Hayes, S. Dormitory and Arcadia, including lots at Seibert, McCracken, Draper-Seidschlag, Davis, Ernest-Burnham, Moore and Waldo Library. These lots do not need to be vacant, but no traffic will be allowed in or out from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m.

Closed 8:45 to 10 a.m.

  • Business Court and Wilbur Street
  • Lots 72F, 72R, 72W (at Schneider Hall and Fetzer Center)
  • Lots 37 and 38 (behind Kohrman Hall)
  • These lots do not need to be vacant, but no traffic will be allowed in or out from 8:45 to 10 a.m.

Using sidewalks, the racecourse also passes in front of Waldo Library, through the Fountain Plaza at Miller Auditorium, in front of Faunce Student Services Building, through the pedestrian underpass at Haenicke Hall, between Rood Hall and Everett Tower, in front of Schneider Hall and the Fetzer Center, through Goldsworth Valley and past the north entrance to Sangren Hall--all between 9 and 10 a.m.
