2004 Air Race Classic 'flight log'

by Amanda Gruden and Sarah Tower

June 23, 2004

GILLETTE, Wyo.--Hello from Gillette, Wyo. Our day began at 5 a.m. CDT. After a positive weather briefing, we packed up and enjoyed a takeoff breakfast with all the racers and then headed to the airplanes for the start.

At 8 a.m., the first five airplanes started up and taxied out for departure. By 8:30, all 33 aircraft were airborne. We flew from Wichita, Kan., to Lamar Colo., to North Platte, Neb., and finally ended up in Gillette. it is now 9 p.m. MDT.

The flights were uneventful, with plenty of sunshine and tailwinds. Sarah and I encountered new scenery and America's heartland at its best. I finally saw a wild antelope.

Tomorrow our day starts at 5 a.m., and we fly from here to Huron, S.D., Evelth, Minn., and maybe Sheboygan, Wis., depending on the weather.

Thank you to everyone for all of your support. Until tomorrow, blue skies and tailwinds.
