Library displays photos by alumnus Gary Cialdella

June 1, 2004

KALAMAZOO--Photographs by Western Michigan University alumnus Gary Cialdella are on display until July 15 in the Upjohn Rotunda of Waldo Library.

Chosen from Cialdella's "Calumet Series," the images focus on houses and factories in the "Rust Belt," the heavily industrialized area around Chicago and cover a period from the late 1980s to the present. Cialdella describes the series as "a two-sided coin, one side showing us desolation and blight, the other showing the small triumphs and celebrations of the people who live there."

Ciadella is a partner with WMU alumna Susan Carr in Carr Ciadella Photography of Kalamazoo, which specializes in architectural and interior photography. A biography of Ciadella and images from the Calumet Series are available at <www.exclusivelyblackandwhite.com/gary.html>.

The exhibit is located on the first floor of the Upjohn Rotunda, which is just inside the main library entrance. Waldo Library is open seven days a week, except holidays. For library hours, visit the Web at <www.wmich.edu/library/hours>.
