Edwards leads business college during dean search

KALAMAZOO--Dr. Adrian "Ed" Edwards has been named interim dean of the Haworth College of Business at Western Michigan University.
The appointment was made June 22 by WMU Provost Daniel M. Litynski, and will be effective August 1. Edwards is a professor and former chairperson of the Department of Finance and Commercial Law. He will serve as dean while a national search is conducted for a replacement for Dr. James W. Schmotter, who is leaving to assume the presidency of Western Connecticut State University.
"Ed Edwards has had a long and distinguished career, and an excellent record as a teacher and administrator at Western Michigan University," wrote Litynski in a message to the campus community. "Professor Edwards has wide-ranging respect from his colleagues and the community. We know he will do an outstanding job for the students of Western during this interim period and thank him for his willingness to serve."
Edwards served as chairperson of the Department of Finance and Commercial Law from 1998 until 2003, and was chairperson of the Finance Area from 1969 until 1975. He joined the University in 1964 as an assistant professor, prior to which he worked for the Bank of Montreal and as an economic and budget analyst for the Canadian government. Edwards is a trustee of the city of Kalamazoo and Kalamazoo County retirement plans, and a former trustee of the Parkstone Family of Mutual Funds. He has accumulated more than 55 publications, research studies and professional presentations.
At WMU, Edwards has served on the University's Budget and Finance Council, the Athletic Board, the Athletic Hall of Fame Board and as an NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative. He was part of the Committee to Establish the Position of Provost at WMU and has served on the business college's Promotion Committee and Graduate Review Council, among other activities.
Edwards earned his bachelor's degree in economics and accounting at St. Francis Xavier University in 1960, a master's degree in finance and economics from the University of Detroit in 1962, and a doctoral degree in finance from Ohio State University in 1967.
