KALAMAZOO--Select members of the Western Michigan University women's and men's track and field teams will take part in the NCAA Mideast Regional, May 28-29 at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium on the Louisiana State University campus in Baton Rouge.
WMU athletes who post a top-four finish in their respective events will qualify for the NCAA Championships, slated for June 9-12 at the University of Texas.
The Mideast Regional is comprised of 78 men's programs and 81 women's teams from Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee and Wisconsin. It is one of four regionals being contested this weekend.
Listed below are WMU's regional qualifiers, with their event and start times (EDT).
Shayna Sangster, Januale Bennett, Sheriese Lucas, Krisy Mahome
WMU women's coach Kelly Lycan hopes to advance his 4x400 relay to the nationals for the second straight year. "We're going head-to-head against some of the best programs in the country," says Lycin, "but I like our chances. All I ask is that we compete to the best of our ability."
On the men's side, coach Mike Turk looks to extend the season into June. "We have five guys right on the edge who will have to come up with their best performances of the season to get out of this regional," says Turk. "Our guys are going to give it their best shot."
The track and field teams are the last of Western Michigan's 20 athletic squads still competing this season.
