Feb. 10, 2004

KALAMAZOO--The Merling Trio will perform with bassist Tom Knific in a Faculty Artist Series concert at 8:15 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, in the Dalton Center Recital Hall.

General admission tickets for the Merling Trio and Tom Knific are $10. Students and senior citizens pay $5. Tickets will be available at the door, but advance purchases are recommended and may be made through the Miller Auditorium Ticket Office at (269) 387-2300 or toll free (800) 228-9858.

The conert will feature performances of Haydn's early "Trio in A-flat Major," Hob. XV:14; Smetana's highly emotional and expressive "Trio in G minor," Op. 15; and the WMU premiere of American composer Frank Proto's "Quartet for Piano and String Bass."

The Merling Trio was founded in 1988 and quickly established itself as a premiere WMU faculty ensemble. Known both for successful commissions of works by contemporary composers and interpretations of the standard repertoire, their live concert performances are broadcast widely on both radio and television, including a recent live broadcast over Chicago's WFMT.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer said of the Merling Trio's musical artistry, "The players shaped a grand interpretation, fluent in rhythm and rich in romantic feeling."

The Merling Trio features WMU School of Music faculty members Renata Artman Knific, violin; Bruce Uchimura, cello; and Susan Wiersma Uchimura, piano.
