Opera Workshop presents Puccini's "Gianni Schicchi"
Nov. 11, 2003
KALAMAZOO--The Opera Workshop at Western Michigan University
presents a semi-staged workshop presentation of Puccini's beloved
comic opera "Gianni Schicchi" beginning at 8:15 p.m.
Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 19-20, in the Dalton Center Recital
Hall. The performances are free and open to the public.
The opera includes the famous soprano aria "O mio babbino
caro," which has been featured in many films and commercials.
The Opera Workshop is an acting class offering students the opportunity
to learn basic stage techniques for opera in preparation for
appearing in more fully staged productions later in the year.
Normally the class culminates in a program of operatic excerpts,
but this year the instructors, Stage Director Carl Ratner and
Conductor Dr. David Little, felt that this semi-staged workshop
of the one-act opera would offer the students greater opportunities
to study complete roles. The class includes sophomore through
senior voice majors, as well as students not majoring in music.
