Michigan sociologists hold annual meeting at WMU
Oct. 21, 2003
KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University's Department of Sociology
will play host Saturday, Nov. 1, to the 2003 annual meeting of
the Michigan Sociological Association.
The event will begin at 8 a.m. at the Fetzer Center and will
feature keynote speaker Dr. Michael Hamm, the C.S. Mott Chair
of Sustainable Agriculture at Michigan State University. He will
address those attending with a talk on "Social Action: Using
Sociology to Change the World."
"Dr. Hamm's presentation is about community-based food
systems," says Dr. Thomas
Van Valey, professor and chairperson of WMU's Department of Sociology.
"This is a key element of a social action plan to help urban
communities develop their own sources of agricultural products,
thus reducing the reliance and pressure of global agriculture."
