Vehicle registration rates increase
July 16, 2003
KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University trustees, acting
at their July 16 meeting, approved an increase in student vehicle
registration rates, which will be used to fund significant improvements
to the University's roadways and parking facilities.
The WMU Board of Trustees raised vehicle registration rates
for full-time students from $250 to $300 for the 2003-04 academic
year. Those who are willing to walk a bit further to their campus
destination will pay 50 percent less: parking at Lawson Ice Arena
will cost $150 for the academic year for all students.
According to Robert M. Beam, WMU vice president for business
and finance, the increase will help to cover the cost of substantial
improvements to the University's existing roadways and parking
system. The cost of operating the parking system, reconstruction
of W. Michigan Ave. from Howard St. to Rankin Ave., and a new
bus service to the Parkview Campus will also be financed at least
in part by vehicle registration revenue.
Vehicle registration rates also will rise for two-wheel motor
vehicles, part-time students, and passes valid for individual
semesters or sessions.
